The American Family and Insurance

“The American family and insurance,” says Steve Kobrin, LUTCF, “are historically connected. Indeed, preparing for the unexpected is an American family value that's shaped the insurance industry.” Read along, as Steve shares his bird's-eye-view of the American family and insurance.

The American Family and Life Insurance

Let's focus on a sober topic for a moment—the time when you and I will leave this earth.

Contemplating

It is probably not your favorite topic, but it is guaranteed to happen and is, therefore, the reason why we all buy life insurance. As a matter of fact, it is the inevitability of this event that makes life insurance the only form of insurance for which it is guaranteed a claim will be made and benefits paid, as long as the policy is kept in force.

Contemplating one's own demise is mind-boggling. We can't imagine what it is like. Emotionally, it fills us with fear and many other feelings we try hard to avoid having. It conjures up all kinds of negative thoughts about the "afterlife" - most of which are based on superstition.

Some of us tend to just shut down when the topic is mentioned. Who wants to get depressed? Life is for the living! Let's not bother ourselves with the things that really don't affect us - we're dead!

Planning

Yet, as early as Biblical times, people planned carefully for their demise. Stories are related about Abraham, Joseph, and others who made preparations for not only themselves, but for their families as well. They saw that stage of existence as a continuation of this one.

You can look at the North American Indians, the Central American native peoples and many other civilizations and see the American perspective of death has always been part and parcel of living life. A very common attitude, stretching across many peoples, is that we must live life as if one could die today.

A morbid thought? Sure.

Depressing? Could be.

But empowering? Very.

Prioritizing

If you live life from that point of view, it's easy to set priorities.

Superficial stuff is seen for what it is. Important matters rise to the top. If you realize that an appointment with your Maker is coming up, you get your act together. You want to get the best results possible on your "Exam" (Test? Consultation? Homecoming? You decide. But a lot is on the line any way you look at it.).

Regardless of your religious persuasion or theological make-up, your debts, your obligations, and the needs of those dependent on you all attain a critical importance. We each have a built-in need to have a clean slate, to really do good by the people with whom we have obligations.

Why is that?

Because no one wants to enter an appeal, a negotiation, or an evaluation with a black mark. It's like applying for a bank loan with bad credit—those missed car payments from five years ago will come back to haunt you.

Insuring

Decent people certainly wouldn't leave their families destitute if they could help it. Nobody would want the bank to foreclose the mortgage, or to shut down the business, due to lack of funds.

Quite the opposite!

Most of us would rather "die a hero." We would rather leave our affairs in better condition then when we started. Wouldn't it be great if our spouse and children could be set for life? If the cash needs for our business could be secured for the long term? If the financial burden of our favorite charity could be eased a bit? Of course it would!

And if right now a check was placed in front of you for the full amount that would be required, you would sign it eagerly. Oh—and where's the money going to come from? Nothing less than a sturdy, reputable, financial institution making a solid guarantee for payment.

Your Own American Family and Life Insurance

Life insurance is the ideal financial planning instrument to protect your family's future—contemplating, planning, prioritizing, and insuring. And now you know, it's also the American way!

As one client wrote, “Now I can rest easy knowing my family and newborn son are protected.” A simple and poignant truth, expressed by a husband and father that knows what's at stake.
